Mr. James Smallwood – Director

The Olympic Marching Trojans have long been a source of pride for the Steele Creek Community, winning Grand Champion in numerous competitions, and taking Superior ratings wherever they perform.  This year, we are very excited to introduce our new band director, Mr. James Smallwood, who comes to us from Bristol, Virginia.  We feel that his musical experience, combined with his concern for the students, will be a great addition to our band program, and Mr. Smallwood, along with the OHS Band Boosters, will ensure that the tradition of excellence continues – BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!

For the past 27 years, we have hosted the “Trojan Classic”, one of the largest and most excellent competitions in the state.  This has been our primary source of income for the band and guard program, bringing in approximately $20,000 profit.  These funds pay for competition expenses, staff salaries, travel expenses, program writing, entry fees, as well as administrative costs to operate a competition band.  This past year, we were forced to cancel the Classic, due to circumstances beyond our control.  The Band Boosters worked very hard to try to overcome this financial hardship through fundraisers, fees, athletic booster and school support, and cutting our spending, but it just hasn’t been enough.  We now have a new director, who we are unable to provide adequate funds to operate this band program properly.  We find ourselves in a desperate financial situation, that we cannot overcome on our own.

We are asking individuals, corporations and small businesses, churches, parents, students – anyone who benefits from being part of a strong community, to please consider helping us with a tax-deductible donation (the band has 501(c)(3) tax exempt status).  Any amount will be greatly appreciated.  All donors will receive a letter acknowledging the donation, and the names will be listed in the 2007 Trojan Classic Program.  For a donation of $250 or more, we will provide an advertisement in the program, as well.

It is our desire that the band program be associated with one word – EXCELLENCE, and with your help, we will continue to make Olympic a source of pride for our community.  Thank you for taking the time to read this and consider our request.  Whether or not you are able to make a financial donation, we appreciate your support of the Olympic Band program, and look forward to many more years of bringing music to our students and community.
